Ministry Lessons From Cyclone Nargis Outreach
FEBRUARY 2010 – WRITTEN BY JAMES KHONG

Blessed be the Lord. We are expecting our 2010 Summer Leadership Seminars (SLS) team soon. Please know that you, our partners, are working with a country that is on the way to transformational change.  Myanmar churches, even before, were recognized as among the fastest growing churches in the world. I think I heard this quote from Bob Kuest. According Patrick Johnston in the 2001 edition of Operation World, Myanmar Christians were 3% of the population in 1980 and are now 8.9%. This shows quite a high growth rate within 3 decades.

After Cyclone Nargis, God opened a door which nobody can shut. The Delta region is the bulk of the population of Myanmar, and it was the rice bowl of Myanmar during the colonial time of Asia. After Nargis, because of the Christians' touch through humanitarian relief, they are extremely open to the Gospel. We have a harvest field of four groups that we have been serving and working with.  In one of the three villages  we have been taking care of, we are starting a church in called Kwins Khan. On four occasions, including last SLS, we had been baptizing 39.  There are 10 more to do so. We have the first Kanan convert who has graduated from PCBS stationed there to start teaching there and she is doing a good work there.

Mary, Tintsan and one Eastern Bible Institute (EBI) girl student went to that village recently during January. Marta and I were planning to go there as a family, but she became ill and we changed our plans.

Our account these days was below the limit, and we went there with the money Matthew and Heather Wallace of New Mission Systems International (NMSI) put in.  It was a land spot available at a good price and we purchased it for the church there to use.  The monk from the village has been coming  to Tamwe Christian Center (TCC), even sitting in the worship service, when I preached. He became one of my interviewees for my studies also.

Here friends, my point is. First, please spread the news and have many pray over this. We approaching the unreached through "people approach" and with the receptivity and potential kingdom growth in Delta, God will increase Myanmar Christian percentages through all of us.

The situation in Delta is - in May of 2008 they were hard hit by Cyclone Nargis.  The very next harvest was poor. The second year their production was only one third compare to what it normally is.  This year, the situation is not promising and many especially non-believers are probably going to lose their houses and some their rice fields for their debts according Steve Rawang Pong who came back from Lapputta and reported to us. They are expecting harvests far below average, food scarcity, and more hard economic times.

Kwinsa Khan villagers (260 villagers both Christians and non-Christians) also say, "We just need help for rice. Other needs can be coped with somehow. But even though you do not bring anything, just come and visit us."  There have been many groups coming, but the bond between us and them has been different.  So we figured that out today together.  If we provide food for them on our trip  $150 will provide rice for one month, $50 for the travel expanse for 4 to 5 members. So with $200 dollars we can make one trip a month.  Marta and I will go with the children in February and the money Krepps (from NMSI) provides toward feeding the hungry will be also used this time. There is also the other half of land spot available and it would be good to buy that one.  So we also need $150 for it. (It is 40 by 80. If we buy that one also, we will have 80 x 160).  Looks good in terms on ministry use and stewardship.

These days, we are also moved by the disaster in Haiti.  Let us also think about the situation there. We pray that the hearts of the people there are moved toward God too.

Now we are reaching the lost through contextualized Gospel approach. That way the Gospel is seen as their own terms and symbols, not foreign.  God is moving in the hearts of people there. Are our hearts moved?

God Bless you
James, Marta, Mary, Dagung
